Grand Master of Portugal Passes Away

Most Worshipful brother Almiro Marques, Grand Master of the Regular Grand Lodge of Portugal, passed to the Celestial Lodge this evening. GM Marques was a native of Marinha Grande and a lawyer. He was elected as Grand Master in 2005.

According to an article in the Jornal de Noticias, he was 77 years old, and apparently died of respiratory problems, compounded by pneumonia.

His column is broken and his brethren mourn.

  1. Bro. Chris,

    Correction is needed.

The Grand Master of Portugal, Most Worshipful Brother Mário Martin Guia is
fortunately alive and in good health.

Mr. Almiro Marques belonged to a clandestine Masonic stile organisation.

It was organised from a scission in 1996 in Portuguese Regular Masonry, which calls itself Regular Grand Lodge of Portugal. To avoid confusions the only internationally recognised Portuguese Regular Masonic Body (also the only one recognised by all American Regular Grand Lodges) decided to change its name to Portuguese Regular Grand Lodge (Legal). This is The Regular Body under the current leadership of Brother Mário Martin Guia.

This said, and different paths aside, I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Almiro Marques, who was personally a fine man, a respected lawyer and a gentleman.

  3. Dear Brother Chris, all information you have post is correct. There was no need for correction at all. Unfortunately there are "some" dissidents of the GLRP that was founded in 1991 like that can obtain benefit with the confusion created by choosing a similar name for the group GLLP/GLLP founded in December 23 1996. This post above proves that.

Almiro Gaspar Marques was the 4th Grand master of the GLRP founded in 1991 and we are grateful for your condolences Bro Chris. The chain is broken... :(

The Regular Grand Lodge of Portugal was created under a warrant from the Grande Loge Nationale Française by Decrees 762 and 763 of June 29, 1991. It was incorporated as a civil association under Portuguese law some days afterwards, on July 15, 1991, on the official books of the 3rd Public Notary of Lisbon.

Grand Masters of GLRP by CHRONOLOGY:

    1. Fernando Teixeira
    2. Nandim de Carvalho
    3. José Eduardo da Fonseca Medeiros
    4. António Marques Miguel
    5. Almiro Gaspar Marques
