World Conference on Fraternalism, Freemasonry, and History: Research in Ritual, Secrecy, and Civil Society, Paris, May 29-30, 2015

The Policy Studies Organization is sponsoring the World Conference on Fraternalism, Freemasonry, and History: Research in Ritual, Secrecy, and Civil Society at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, France, May 29-30, 2015. The conference will be held biennially in Paris, and hopes to open new doors while promoting multilingual and multicultural scholarship in areas such as, the relations between such Masonic-related subjects as the Companionnage, guilds, friendly societies, and Greek fraternities.

Convened by the journal Ritual, Secrecy, and Civil Society, in cooperation with the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, France, the first World Conference on Fraternalism, Freemasonry, and History: Research in Ritual, Secrecy, and Civil Society, focuses on the study of ritual, secrecy, and civil society vis-à-vis the dynamics of Masonic scholarship around the world. The conference explores how civil society, secrecy, and ritual have been important elements during different episodes of local and world histories, and indeed still are. The WCFFH 2015 is a part of the Policy Studies Organization's support of research into social capital, civility, and the role of non governmental organizations in democracy.

All papers accepted presented will be published by Westphalia Press in three collections: Vital Masonic Scholarship in the 21st CenturyNew Research in Secret Societies, and European Scholarship in Secrecy and Ritualism, and will be available in-print and electronically.

In order to make possible the attendance of all interested parties, the sponsors have agreed that there will be no registration fee for the 2015 conference and complimentary coffee and refreshments will be provided for those in attendanceThis owes much to the great support of the Bibliothèque Nationale in being such a generous host. One of the world's extraordinary libraries with a remarkable Masonic collection, it is well worth exploring while you are in Paris. And although there is no registration fee, it is imperative that all attendees and participants still register, so that we may facilitate the proper arrangements and accommodations. Early inquiry is appreciated in regards to special requests for hearing enhancement, physically challenged access, child care, or other potential needs of our guests.

Brother Saves Another During Ceremony

Good job, Brother. Well done! From WWLP in Massachusetts:
EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – When a friend’s heart stopped beating during a Masonic initiation ceremony for both men at the Masonic Temple in East Longmeadow, Matt counted on all of his skill as an EMT and first responder to overcome the odds against saving his friend’s life.
“The percentile of people who come back is very low,” he explained. “Either they don’t come back at all or there’s some type of brain damage. because by the time you get to the person it’s too long. Usually when you’re able to get to the person in the first two minutes that’s the best chance of living.”
Fellow Mason Ken White is among those who nominated his Masonic brother as a Hometown Hero. “One brother helping another brother at the instant they became Masonic brothers. You look and see a man stretched out on the ground and your heart sinks,” he told 22News, “you’re very nervous, you’re praying for the man.”
Matt Gosselin advocates widespread CPR training at Masonic Temples throughout Western Massachusetts. As an EMT, he knows the value of being prepared. “Four hours out of your life, 40 bucks out of your life, and it might be your grandmother, your sister, your brother that goes down or your child.”
At the Mass Mutual Center on the morning of March 19th, the Western Massachusetts Red Cross will honor Matthew Gosselin and six other extraordinary individuals as 2015 Hometown Heroes.

"Complete" List of Secret Societies and Fraternal Organizations in the US

For researchers or the curious, here is a list of all fraternal organizations that have existed in the United States, by initials. In case you have found a medal or sword with unknown initials on it in grandpa's attic chest or on a tombstone.

Go here, Secret Society. Fraternal Organizations, Abbreviations, Slogans, Mottoes, a Complete List.

I'm not sure how complete it is. They list my favorite, the International Order of Hoo Hoo, but by a shortened name. It's official name is the International Concatenenated Order of Hoo Hoo, Incorporated. But interesting for collectors and geneologists.

New Publication From the Vatican Reinforces the Innocence of the Templars

UPDATE: Sorry, I didn't notice this was from 2007. I know the Grand Lodge of New York's library has one. It must have popped up on my Google News Alert because of Friday the 13th. I thought it was another document. My mistake.

----------------------------------------
For Templar scholars, this is enormous news. From Reuters:

The Knights Templar, the medieval Christian military order accused of heresy and sexual misconduct, will soon be partly rehabilitated when the Vatican publishes trial documents it had closely guarded for 700 years.
A reproduction of the minutes of trials against the Templars, "'Processus Contra Templarios -- Papal Inquiry into the Trial of the Templars'" is a massive work and much more than a book -- with a 5,900 euros ($8,333) price tag.
"This is a milestone because it is the first time that these documents are being released by the Vatican, which gives a stamp of authority to the entire project," said Professor Barbara Frale, a medievalist at the Vatican's Secret Archives.
"Nothing before this offered scholars original documents of the trials of the Templars," she told Reuters in a telephone interview ahead of the official presentation of the work on October 25.
The epic comes in a soft leather case that includes a large-format book including scholarly commentary, reproductions of original parchments in Latin, and -- to tantalize Templar buffs -- replicas of the wax seals used by 14th-century inquisitors.
Reuters was given an advance preview of the work, of which only 799 numbered copies have been made.
One parchment measuring about half a meter wide by some two meters long is so detailed that it includes reproductions of stains and imperfections seen on the originals.
Pope Benedict will be given the first set of the work, published by the Vatican Secret Archives in collaboration with Italy's Scrinium cultural foundation, which acted as curator and will have exclusive world distribution rights.
The Templars, whose full name was "Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon", were founded in 1119 by knights sworn to protecting Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land after the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099.
They amassed enormous wealth and helped finance wars of some European monarchs. Legends of their hidden treasures, secret rituals and power have figured over the years in films and bestsellers such as "The Da Vinci Code".
The Knights have also been portrayed as guardians of the legendary Holy Grail, the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper before his crucifixion.

The Vatican expects most copies of the work to be bought up by specialized libraries at top universities and by leading medieval scholars.

Read more here. With the dollar vs. Euro price at incredible lows, this lowers the price to just $6,252.58 today.

E-books Go Out of Fashion As Book Sales Revive

From Time Magazine:

British book stores have good news for bibliophiles, reporting that more people have been buying physical books recently. What’s more, sales of e-readers have apparently slumped according to their reports. Waterstones, a U.K. book store chain which also sells Amazon’s Kindle, told the Financial Times that demand for the e-reader has all but disappeared.

The Crescent and the Compass by Angel Millar

Brother Angel Millar, author of the beautiful book Freemasonry: A History is coming out later this month with what looks like a fascinating study of Freemasonry and Islam. For more information, look at http://islam-freemasonry.com

London Freemasons

A generally fair minded article appeared about London Masons on the GetWestLondon website, written by Danya Bazaraa on February 20th. Read it here.

The United Grand Lodge of England is working hard to promote the fraternity in the historically hostile British press, and is generally doing a good job of it.
