According to Brother Robert Herd, Fox TV's new show "Sleepy Hollow" will feature Ichabod Crane as a Freemason. This will be a large part of the character's background and serve as the foundation of many of the episodes/plots.

Let's hope the distortions are kept to a minimum. It's so easy for creative people to take a little more poetic license than necessary when creating an engaging story. I hope we don't get any undeserved labels out of it.
ReplyDeleteHoping for the best, expecting the worst...
ReplyDeleteAgreed Mark, but it is on Fox and reality is seldom as exciting as fantasy.
ReplyDeleteA Freemason in Upstate New York in the 1820s? What could go wrong?
ReplyDeleteMark, SMIB!!
ReplyDeleteIf he is fighting the evil in the series then that will be good light for the brotherhood.
ReplyDeleteSleepy hallow is an American folk tale. A myth. How much fact is within the myth, how one can relate to that myth is yet to be seen. Details of actions, simple lines and items in the background should also be observed. But, not necessarily to be taken into consideration. Only the viewer can find things that they them selves can relate too.
ReplyDeleteAs brothers we could pressure the network and writers to not give away any of our secrets but at the same time be accurate with our craft.
ReplyDeleteAs brothers we could pressure the network and writing staff to not give away any secrets at the same time being as historical and accurate.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame they couldn't make a protagonist be a freemason in a show that didn't look god awful. My guess is they'll use it to some very uncreative and poorly researched ends.
ReplyDeleteI originally had no intention of watching it, but now, I may have to see.

The exploding shotgun wielded by the Headless Horseman was awesome in the pilot! This show is just campy as all get out and drinking makes it even better. Maybe I should start doing shots each time they mention the Freemasons for now on.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, the first two episodes had zero references to the craft that I saw. Am I missing something? I think there was an all-seeing-eye on a headstone, but that is hardly a Masonic reference.
ReplyDeleteI just returned from watching the 2013 movie entitled, "Prisoners." It stars Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Terrence Howard. The movie is about child abduction and the human monsters who abduct children.
ReplyDeleteJake Gyllenhaal plays the role of a MORAL Police Detective in the film, named Loki. He wears a beautiful Masonic Signet Ring which is prominently visible throughout the entire movie.
Seeing an actor wearing a Masonic Ring while playing the role of a positive moral character was refreshing compared to actor, Nick Nolte, in the 1997, Oliver Stone movie entitled, "U Turn". In U Turn, the Masonic ring wearing character played by Nick Nolte was highly deranged, IMMORAL, and psychotic.
tomorrow night episode of "Sleepy Hollow",Oct. 7th, is titled "The Lesser Key of Solomon"
ReplyDeleteit's on the Fox Network so check your local listings
I'll be watching it
sounds interesting !!!!
Will they be accurate? I do not know if anyone connected with the Production is a Freemason. I have yet to see any movie or series do a decent job of not lying.

I will try it, but I have never seen a movie or television show that showed us positively or correctly. Only in books have we received positive presentation, because you can hold the author to a standard that does not apply to movies or television shows.
ReplyDeleteIn plain English, I will believe the decency IF I see it.
I have been watching the show from the beginning....very good and keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you like a good mystery, thriller, check it out. As far as masonic symbolism, I will keep my eyes open, but nothing that has really jumped out at me yet.
ReplyDeleteWe are being connected to witchcraft I fear in a very subtle manner. Did anyone else catch the reference to King Solomon having a book of black magic spells? 23:36 in the time line. http://www.fox.com/sleepy-hollow/full-episodes/52289603690
ReplyDeleteWell they came right out tonight and labeled us as Sorcerers and spell casters! Yes we are the good guys but we do it with witches. I am appalled at the cheap shot they have taken at our Fraternity for the sake of entertainment.

So i watched this episode last night not knowing the masonic twist. I know, the show is a bit hokey. We know Ichabob Crane was a fictional character that Washington Irving created, however, he had met the Colonel Ichabob Crane in New York and may have used his unique name for his character. I can find nothing about Col Ichabob Crane ever being a mason. I felt the writers did potray the craft in a good note by naming some of the famous masons but as usual, created a deeper layer of secrecy of the craft in the minds of the non mason viewers. I still like the series.
