The description of Bonaparte in the song as being Consul, which appears in the song included in the manuscrip, indicates that it had been composed earlier, some 5 to 10 years before. Nearly the same song, worded slightly differently, is printed in other publications of this period, sometimes naming Napoleon instead of Bonaparte. http://mvmm.org/c/docs/naplongwy.html This manuscript does not demonstrate that Bonaparte was a Freemason, but it does show indeed that French Masons in this period regarded him as a Brother and that the legend of Napoleon's masonic membership was widespread already during his lifetime. While Napoleon never admitted or denied publicly being a Mason, fact is that the French Emperor not only protected the craft, but also actively encouraged the expansion of Freemasonry under his reign.
